CIDP MARKET LINKAGES CONTINUE TO BENEFIT CASHEW FARMERS IN WESTERN PROVINCE

CASHEW farmers in Western
Province are still benefiting from market linkages established under the Cashew
Infrastructure Development Project (CIDP), years after the project came to an
end.
Implemented between 2016
and 2022, CIDP’s goal was not only to boost cashew production but also to
ensure farmers had reliable markets for their produce. One of the lasting
outcomes of the project has been the connection between farmers and buyers
through the Ministry of Agriculture, a system that continues to support cashew
marketing presently.
Speaking during a cashew
aggregation exercise, Assistant District Marketing Development Officer, Alfred
Manda, said approximately 3.5 metric tonnes of raw cashew nuts have so far been
aggregated. He noted, the market linkage component introduced under CIDP
remains active and continues to bring benefits to farmers.
“We’ve brought a raw cashew
nut buyer, and we have aggregated about 3.5 metric tonnes. CIDP has been able
to establish market linkages which we are still able to use even today, which
makes our farmers happy,” he said.
The aggregation exercise
attracted Tumarena Cashew Company, one of the buyers working with farmers in
the area.
Company Director, Matomola
Kumwenda, said the firm is currently purchasing raw cashew nuts at K11 per
kilogramme and is also helping farmers improve the quality of their produce
through better sorting practices.
“Currently this year, we
are buying raw Cashew Nuts at K11 per kilogramme, which is about K550 per 50kg
bad. The reason we come to visit our farmers is to try and teach them a better
way sorting the nuts, if the nuts are well sorted then the quality of the nuts
is good, which makes us also have happy customers,” he said.
For many farmers, access to
buyers remains one of the biggest challenges after harvest. Without a ready
market, cashew produce can remain unsold for long periods, affecting household
incomes and discouraging future production.
One of the beneficiaries,
Ngundu Sitali from Sitoti Agricultural Camp, said the arrival of buyers had
brought relief to local farmers.
“I managed to gather a lot
of Cashew nuts, but I struggled with how I would sell them, but to see a buyer
come all the way to follow us is a very good move,” he said.
The continued collaboration
between farmers, buyers and the Ministry of Agriculture is helping strengthen
the cashew value chain across Western Province. The success of these market
linkages reflect how investments made under CIDP continue to deliver long-term
benefits.-NAIS
